I was very much awaiting the publication of an oracle deck designed around the magical atmosphere of my favourite season of the Wheel of the Year. Seasons of the Witch Yule Oracle by Rockpool Publishing is an absolute masterpiece, both from an artistic point of view, and from an emotional and subject-matter one.
The evocative illustrations by Giada Rose transport me to parallel snow-covered and ethereal worlds, populated by shamanic animals, forest spirits, witches and wise women in the sober quiet of wooded and nocturnal landscapes.
This oracular deck is the second stop on the Wheel of the Year for its creators Lorriane Anderson and Juliet Diaz, following their previous Seasons of the Witch Samhain Oracle which I reviewed here last season.
The Yule Oracle leaves the darkest atmospheres of Samhain to focus more on the stillness of the snowy night and on the energies of introspection and going inward of this magical season.
It is hard to pick my favourite cards from this deck: many of them remind me of my long years spent in Scandinavia, the tradition of Saint Lucia and the comfort of a lit fireplace in a log cabin on the Italian Alps.
If I have to choose, I would say Hearth, Feasting, and Gatherings for their sense of warmth and community; Frost, Candle Magic and Bear Medicine for their flames in the night and for ritual and shamanic medicine; Darkest Hour for its sense of interiority and powerful symbolism of the Dark Goddess.
I promote Seasons of the Witch Yule Oracle with flying colours and I strongly recommend it both as a gift for yourself or your witchy friends for the Yule season, or as a divination tool to be used all year round to recall the winter energies and atmospheres.
